Oh hello snowdrops ๐
Finally, some early bloomers, the first of many more to come.
I've been waiting for the snow to melt because, let's be real, it's spring now so time to go! After a couple of milder days, with some rain and sun, only bits of the biggest heaps of snow remain. In previous years, I've found snowdrops as early as February in areas facing south. Snowdrops (Galanthus spp) have revealed themselves underneath the melted snow this year just after the seasons shifted to spring.
As I wait for the forests and fields to wake up and be filled with our native wildflowers, the early blooms of this import from parts of Europe and Asia delights me. It's arrival signals the inevitable change of the seasons, these snowdrops are the first of many flowers that will arriving as a cascade across the seasons, from snowmelt to snowfall.
Look for snowdrops as you stroll settled areas, or formerly settled areas, where they've established themselves in clumps and sometimes carpets.
That's what's blooming this week. And now that we have snowdrops, look forward to so much more!
